Tell your Story!

Find your Family!

Welcome to FamNet, the on-line Family History Network for those with a New Zealand connection!

FamNet exists to support any individual, family, or group that has information to share with others over the Internet, or that wants to participate in the global on-line community of people with an interest in Family History. We do this
  • By supporting project teams creating useful databases and other resources of interest to family historians
  • By supporting others with useful on line databases, and as far as possible integrating them with other databases to simplify searches
  • By operating web sites, and linking to many other web sites
  • By continuing to develop more facilities to support the family history community.

  • FamNet offers some great facilities.   More and more databases are becoming available as groups and individuals see the value in working together in the FamNet community.   Expect also more development of facilities for group communication - blogs, wikis, web sites, etc - as funds for this become available.

Already on this site you’ll find a lot to help you research your family. We have 14,400,225 people in family trees, many with attached documents and pictures: this is already the largest collection of New Zealand family trees available on the web, and a major repository of Australian trees. There are an increasing number of other databases: shipping, useful web sites, soldiers, etc. Plus there are articles and newsletters that will help you get started researching your family. Whether you are passionately interested in genealogy, or have only an occasional interest in family history, this is a great place to start looking for information about your ancestors. We hope that you will find what you are looking for here.

But it's more than just a great place to look for information! By combining the web's advantages with the functions of a personal genealogy program (think Legacy, Family Tree Maker, etc: but with a shared database), FamNet is a great place to create, publish, and share one's family stories. A place where our precious memories can be recorded before they are lost for ever.

Share the dream and submit your family tree! It's free. In fact it's better than free, because we pay you with a subscription credit. And you don't lose control! Your tree remains yours - you control access to it, it can't be downloaded, only you can see your living people, only you can update it (unless you grant permission to another user).  You will have to register, but registration is free, searching is free, storing your records is free, and retrieving your own records is, and ALWAYS will be, free. However, a small subscription is needed to see others' records.

    What's New

    July 2010:
  • A database of about 1700 pictures and documents of WW1 soldiers is now on line.

  • June 2010:
  • Peter Nash's indexes of Hokianga cemeteries have been added into the Cemetery databases. FamNet now records details of 17 cemeteries, up from 3. More are coming.
  • NZGDB has implemented a facility to display genealogy charts - descendents, ancestors, and hourglass - from any of its 14M records

  • How do I join FamNet?

Just register: enter your email, and click [New User]. Or join a group like Whangarei Family History Group or Kapiti Genealogy who have joined en-masse.

You can join for free and you'll get access to some resources, but to get full access you need to subscribe. Individual subscriptions are currently $25 per year, or $100 for 10 years, or you may get a discounted subscription through membership of a group such as Kapiti.

Of course, this site is a work-in-progress. Every month you'll see it getting better - more data, more features, problems fixed, looking better. If you have a suggestion, please let us know (Contact Us). If you strike an error (sorry), please let us know, and bear with us while we try to fix it

Please [Log In] to get access to the on-line databases. If this if your first time, click the [New User] button to register. You might like to take the guided tour Enjoy!
